The New Jersey Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (NJ-AIHA)  and NJ ASSE is offering a comprehensive Industrial Hygiene Course. The course is designed to provide basic training in some critical areas of industrial hygiene and safety and will likely be beneficial for those entering the field as well as those who are just looking to sharpen their skills in certain technical areas. In addition, many of the people who have attended the program have found it to be very helpful in preparing for the CIH and CSP examinations. Certified Industrial Hygienists have the opportunity to obtain CM points per lecture (0.167 points per contact hour). Participants are welcome to attend any or all of the lecture sessions, depending on their individual training needs. People who need certification points must sign an attendance sheet for each session.

North American Occupational Safety and Health Week, or NAOSH Week is May 6-12, 2018. NAOSH Week is intended to raise awareness about occupational safety, health and the environment. Click HERE for more information on NAOSH week and HERE for a presentation on distracted driving.

Local members of NJ ASSE along with thousands of other organizations, will be working to raise awareness of the importance of preventing on-the-job and off-the-job accidents, by distributing transportation best practices information and urging all to heed to traffic rules and regulations.  HERE is a press release.

On Wednesday, April 18th, NJ ASSE held our monthly chapter dinner meeting at Unilever in Englewood Cliffs.  Members from BSI, BP, General Glass, General Mills, Tiffany and Co, PSE&G, NIST, and other organizations joined the tour.  Our host, Neal Saiz, CSP, CHMM, who is the Safety, Environmental, Sustainability & Security Director, provided a wealth of information about the programs and successes of Safety and Sustainability at Unilever rarely seen at such a large corporation. NJ ASSE supported the Festival 5-K Fun Run on April 14th at he New Overpeck County Park in Ridgefield Park.  Information was given out to run participants on the safety profession.  A few of us even ran the race!  A good time was had by all.

The New Jersey Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (NJAIHA) is pleased to offer scholarships for the study and promotion of industrial hygiene / environmental health and safety for the 2018-2019 school year.

Up to $7,500 is available for award among the selected candidates.

• Scholarships are available for students who will be enrolled in the Fall of 2018 in courses leading to a degree in industrial hygiene or allied fields such as occupational/environmental health and safety.

• Recipients must reside in NJ (if attending college outside of NJ) or be enrolled in an accredited college in NJ.

• Previous recipients are eligible to apply.

• Minimum cumulative GPA is 3.0.

• Deadline for application is April 6, 2018. The recipients will be notified in late May and are invited to attend the June 2018 NJAIHA meeting and make a short presentation to receive their award.

• Applicants must provide the following:
  • Completed scholarship application (Download Here or Submit Electronically Below);
  • A statement on a single sheet of paper of why you should be the recipient of the scholarship;
  • A copy or official transcript of records with GPA; and
  • A letter of recommendation from a faculty member or course-related employer, but preferably the student’s advisor.

During the 8 years I have been in safety, paying attention to detail has been a vital part in providing and implementing a strong safety program.  This includes the ability to communicate, document, and follow through on multiple platforms to execute a successful safety program.  This is paramount in developing a lasting safety culture as well.  These skills translate exceedingly well for a secretary, especially for an organization as strong and well run as the New Jersey American Society of Safety Engineers.  As your secretary, it would be a tremendous honor to aid in the continuous success while building on the great foundation previous and current executive board members have worked so hard to construct.  Thank you!
