April Meeting at Unilever

On Wednesday, April 18th, NJ ASSE held our monthly chapter dinner meeting at Unilever in Englewood Cliffs.  Members from BSI, BP, General Glass, General Mills, Tiffany and Co, PSE&G, NIST, and other organizations joined the tour.  Our host, Neal Saiz, CSP, CHMM, who is the Safety, Environmental, Sustainability & Security Director, provided a wealth of information about the programs and successes of Safety and Sustainability at Unilever rarely seen at such a large corporation. Safety at Unilever embodies a number of outstanding initiatives such as Motor On Mobile Off “MOMO” for employees who drive on behalf of the company.  For more information about Unilever Safety visit Creating a Safe Workplace.

Unilever also has a unique vision and mission in regard to Sustainability, which they communicate and support at every level in the organization.  The Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP) is a blueprint for achieving the vision to grow the business, whilst decoupling their environmental footprint from growth and increasing our positive social impact. Unilever’s ambition is to double the size of their business and half their environmental footprint, become zero non-hazardous waste landfill, and has a goal to be carbon positive by 2030!  Details about many of the efforts that support these progressive efforts and best practices can be found at https://www.unilever.com/sustainable-living/.  In addition to the education provided, the new and improved building design at the North America Corporate Headquarters exhibits Sustainability, diversity of employees, open space building design concept, product displays, collaboration spaces, employee lounges, an employee store, cafeteria encouraging healthy choices, and even tea bar.  Best of all, the ice cream was free!
