Under the direction of the Supervising Fire Safety Engineer, the selected candidate will be responsible for performing technical duties focused on maintaining and promoting a fire and life safety environment and culture for Port Authority (PA) employees, tenants, and patrons; performing field audits of physical conditions and of fire protection relevant to occupancy and construction at all PA facilities and spaces; conducting or witnessing annual and acceptance tests of fixed fire protection systems and equipment; reviewing and commenting on plans and specifications for tenant and PA areas; participating in final acceptance inspections to assure conformance with codes and approved documents; writing evaluation reports with recommendations for corrective actions; participating in special ad hoc technical investigations or projects; performing as a fire protection engineering and fire suppression operations consultant on behalf of the Agency. The position requires travel to all Port Authority facilities and work hours on occasion may include early morning, late evening and weekend shifts to respond to emergencies and safety-related events or incidents.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, fire science, emergency services or related field.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in fire protection engineering, fire suppression, or safety management field is required.
- Working familiarity with applicable local, state and federal codes and standards.
- Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license.
Desired Qualifications
Ideal candidates will present the following profile.
- Practical safety and fire life safety experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of NYC Fire Code, Uniform Fire Code, and NFPA Standards
- Experienced in NYC DOB codes and standards
- Working knowledge of building fire detection and suppression systems
- Familiarity with Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) status and processes
- Ability to interpret codes and standards and provide guidance and application to ensure compliance
- Ability to identify fire loss risk and provide guidance for reduction
- Ability to work with leadership at all levels in both agency and local government organizations.
- Experience conducting plan reviews for Fire and Life Safety Plans and Emergency Action Plans
- Must be able to respond to facility emergency situations as requested
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate, prepare, analyze, and interpret technical reports.
- Demonstrate ability to conduct field evaluations and investigations, and make technical recommendations based on findings, code requirements, and industry best practices.
- Excellent problem analysis and decision-making skills.
- Demonstrated experience in problem solving and project management.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, multitask and work independently to complete tasks.
- Strong, proven, written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Experience with emerging technologies such as electric and hydrogen vehicles and micromobility platforms.
The successful candidate will be subject to a comprehensive background check, must pass a fingerprint based on criminal history records check in order to obtain an airport Security Identification Display (SIDA) credential. The candidate must be able to maintain SIDA credentials throughout your employment in this position.
