Free 1-day Confined Space course

Rutgers School of Public Health is offering OSHA 7300: Understanding OSHA’s Permit-Required Confined Space Standard course in Somerset, New Jersey, in celebration of Safe & Sound week. This no fee, 1-day course will be held on August 15, 2019.Confined space entry work carries an inherent risk to workers. It has the potential to contain a hazardous environment, contain materials that have the potential to engulf an entrant, walls that converge or floors that slope downward, which may trap or asphyxiate an individual. They may also contain other recognized health or safety hazards, such as unguarded machinery, exposed live wires or heat stress.

David C. Olcott, CSP, CHST, CRIS running for NJ ASSP Treasurer

Throughout his career David has garnered experience in the safety, health, and environmental field while overseeing hazardous waste remediation operations, heavy civil construction & infrastructure improvements, and OSHA and DEP/EPA compliance on project sizes ranging from$1M to $200M. With more than 16 years of experience, his expertise is in formulating, administering, and coordinating programs for businesses to reduce the risk of loss. Additionally, his expertise includes safety and environmental plan development, corporate- and site-level oversight, environmental monitoring and sampling, construction safety, and risk management. As a Facility Security Officer at a large defense contractor, he has been responsible for OPSEC and PHYSEC. He is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), a Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), and a Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS).

David became interested in the position of Treasurer after increasing his attendance at the NJ Chapter Meetings and learning about the open position. David’s interest stems from a desire to be an integral part of the ongoing advancement of the safety professional and protection life, property, and the environment. By being Treasurer, David’s influence will extend beyond the confines of his day-to-day operational activities and into a large body of his peers.

 

 

 

The New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Safety Professionals Celebrates North American Occupational Safety and Health Week

Local members of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Safety Professionals (NJASSP), a state affiliate of the oldest and largest safety society, are concerned that the number one cause of on-the-job and off-the-job deaths continues to be transportation incidents – all modes. Therefore, in celebration of North American Occupational Safety and Health Week (NAOSH) which runs from May 5-11, 2019, the NJASSP along with thousands of other organizations, will be working to raise awareness of the importance of preventing on-the-job and off-the-job accidents, by distributing transportation best practices information and urging all to heed to traffic rules and regulations.

Summer Certification Review Course

The New Jersey Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (NJ-AIHA)  and NJ ASSE is offering a comprehensive Industrial Hygiene Course. The course is designed to provide basic training in some critical areas of industrial hygiene and safety and will likely be beneficial for those entering the field as well as those who are just looking to sharpen their skills in certain technical areas. In addition, many of the people who have attended the program have found it to be very helpful in preparing for the CIH and CSP examinations. Certified Industrial Hygienists have the opportunity to obtain CM points per lecture (0.167 points per contact hour). Participants are welcome to attend any or all of the lecture sessions, depending on their individual training needs. People who need certification points must sign an attendance sheet for each session.

Industrial Hygiene & Safety Lecture Topics:History of Industrial Hygiene, OSHA Act Review and IH Management, Epidemiology, Fire Protection, Emergency Response, Ergonomics, Risk Management – Record Keeping, Indoor Air Quality, BioSafety, Equipment & Facility Safety, Ionizing Radiation, Non-Ionizing Radiation, Math, Statistics & Calculator Review, Air Pollution, Toxicology, Regulatory & Legal Affairs, Physics & Basic Engineering, Air Sampling – IH Chemistry, Direct Reading Instrumentation, Noise, Ventilation, Ethics & Professional Conduct, Respiratory Protection & PPE. The IH classes will be held Tuesday nights (6:00 pm-9:00 pm) beginning the first week of June 2019.

We will have guest speakers on certain safety topics to help prepare people for the CSP exam. Safety classes will be held on Thursday nights (6:00 pm).
